PBMV

Percutaneous Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty

Percutaneous Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty (PBMV) procedure is a used to dilate the mitral valve in the setting of rheumatic mitral valve stenosis.

Procedure

Catheter inserted into femoral vein
  • Advanced to the right atrium
  • Across the interartrial septum
  • Mitral Valve is crossed with a balloon
  • Inflated to relieve the fusion of the miral valve
  • Increases the MItral Valve area
  • Reduces the degree of Miral Stenosis

Results of
PBMV

Immediate

After PBMV – mitral valve area approximately doubles in most cases, which are successful.

Long- Term
  • Significant functional improvement
  • Event free survival for longer period of time.

Special care
population

Special care population
  • Postsurgical or Balloon Commissurotomy
  • Pregnant patients
  • Children & Adolescents
  • Atrial fibrillation/ Thrombotic formation

Contraindication

Moderate or severe regurgitation is present.

Complications

  1. Bleeding at the catheter insertion site
  2. Blood clot to blood vessel at insertion site
  3. Infection risk
  4. Stroke

Indications

  1. Moderate & severe mitral stenosis
  2. Favorable valve morphology
  3. Symptomatic
